Wilco News

About Wilco

Wilco has been dubbed by critics as “America’s Radiohead” because of their wide range of musical genres that is spread throughout all of their albums. Wilco’s sound has been influenced by old 1960’s rock in the likes of John Lennon, Neil Young, and Brian Wilson, whom the band greatly appreciates. Wilco also admires Television, Jason & the Scorchers, The Minutemen, and jazz a la Miles Davis and John Coltrane. They have collaborated with many other bands and had frequent guests on many of their albums. Their most successful collaboration was recording never before released Woody Guthrie songs with Billy Bragg on the album entitled the Mermaid Avenue Sessions in 1998. Not only is their music carefully taken from these bands and people, but they have also stated that their songs are greatly influenced by classic literature including the books: In the Heart of the Heart of the County by William H. Gass, Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller, and The Anxiety of Influence: A Theory of Poetry by Harold Bloom. They engage in a creative exercise to write some of their songs, where one by one they write lines on a typewriter and the next person can only view the line above theirs. They are currently on tour, with lead singer Jeff Tweedy doing a couple of solo dates in Europe before coming back to the U.S. to support Neil Young on his fall tour.
