Wu-Tang Clan ? Taking a Closer Look at the Clan
If your type of music is hip-hop, then you definitely came across Wu-Tang Clan. The New York based group consists of nine American rappers; each has their own solo careers as music artists, record producers, screenwriters, motion picture soundtrack composers, television and film stars, business owners, and product spokespersons. The Wu-Tang Clan has been known for their hardcore rap music style and their ticket to success also launched the careers of several artists and groups.
The word “Wu-Tang” is actually a name of the holy mountain situated in Central China, particularly northwest Hubei province.
more RZA, Ol’ Dirty Bastand and GZA are considered the founders of the clan. They came up with such a name for their group after seeing the film “Shaolin and Wu Tang”, featuring a school of Wu-Tang warriors. They have also developed several backronyms for Wu-Tang such as “Wisdom, Universe, Truth, Allah, Nation and God”, “Witty Unpredictable Talent And Natural Game” and “We Usually Take All Niggas’ Garments”.
Wu-Tang Clan members include the following: (a) Ghostface Killah or Dennis Cole in real life has a unique ability to write lyrics quickly and possesses an exceptional style of rapping; (b) Inspectah Deck or Jason Hunter in real life became famous by rendering outstanding performances both on Wu-Tang and solo albums; (c) Method Man or Clifford Smith in real life was born in 1971 and is the youngest member of the group. He is known to be the most successful in the group, earning a Grammy award and platinum sales for the record “I’ll Be There For You/You’re All I Need” that also featured R&B singer Mary J. Blige; (d) RZA or Robert Diggs in real life is considered the leader of the clan; (e) Raekwon The Chef or Corey Woods in real life was named the chef primarily because of his skills at cooking cocaine; (f) Masta Killa or Elgin Turner in real life was mentored by GZA to hone his rapping skills; (g) GZA or Gary Grice in real life was born in 1966 and is the oldest member of the group; (h) U-God or Lamont Hawkins in real life is one the lesser popular member of the group due to limited exposure; and (i) Ol’ Dirty Bastard or Russel Jones in real life was born in 1968 and passed away in 2004 due to accidental drug overdose.
