Wyclef jean is a renowned Haitian artist. He is a member of the hip-hop band The Fugees. He is well known for establishing the organization Yele Haiti in 2005. It gives scholarships to children and is a big sponsor in Haiti.
Ruffhouse records sold the first album of The Fugees titled “Blunted on reality”. This did not do very well. It was followed by "The score" which sold a record 17 million. Jean embarked on his solo career with “Wyclef Jean presents the carnival featuring the refugee all-stars”. The guests in the album include Hill and Pras, The Neville brothers, Celia Cruz and Melky Sedeck. The album went on to become a huge hit. The two singles in the album: "We trying to stay alive" and "Gone till November" also became a big hit.
The second album released by jean was "The Ecleftic: 2 sides II a book". The guests in the album included Kenney Rogers, The rock, earth, wind & fire, Youssou N'Dour, Mary j. Blige and The rock. The third album was "Masquerade". It was released in 2002. "The preacher's son" was his fourth album which was released in 2003. He released "Sak pase presents: welcome to Haiti (Creole 101) which is his fifth album. Some of the songs in the album are in Haitian Creole. He also wrote songs for some documentaries titled “The agronomist” and the “Ghosts of cite Soleil”.
In 2007 Jean released the song "sweetest girl" (dollar bill). It features Niia, Akon and lil' Wayne. Jean has collaborated with a large number of artists including Mick Jagger, John legend, Ziggy Marley, Prodigy, Sweet Micky, City high, Tarkan, Brandy, Kelly Rogers, Anthony B, Wayne Wonder are some of the names.
He has got numerous awards and nominations including MTV Europe music awards in 2000. He was also given a Golden Globe nomination for the track titled “Million voices” which featured in the film “Hotel Rwanda”.
