Red Sox Could Clinch Wild Card

It wouldn't be definitive, but if the Red Sox can sweep the New York Yankees in their upcoming three-game series at Yankee Stadium, then they put themselves in the driver's seat for Wild Card Berth for the rest of the season. Well, at least in their own division. They would still have to be very cautious of the Minnesota Twins, who are never further than 2 games behind the Red Sox. However, if the Red Sox succeed in sweeping the Yankees then they move ahead 8 games. If they get swept themselves, they will have a very slim 2-game lead. The Red Sox's mentality is to just win every series from here on out, meaning win at least 2 of the 3 games. It would slowly push them further and further towards the wild card playoff berth. It seems like a sound strategy, now they just need to carry it out. Tim Wakefield will be pulled off the DL to start against Andy Pettitte in game 1 between the Sox and Yankees. Game time is 7:05 p.m. EDT.
