After beating the New York Yankees 7-3 on Tuesday and 11-3 on Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox were unable to attain the sweep yesterday losing 3-2 after a Jason Giambi RBI in the ninth. However, they did win the series and that is exactly the plan for the Red Sox as the season winds down. If they take more from the series than they lose then they keep a steady pace that will basically guarantee them the Wild Card berth in the A.L., if not also win them division title. Now they need to look ahead to a brand new series with the Chicago White Sox who are relatively statistically even. The direct matchup between these two means that someone is going to come out worse for wear in terms of playoff chances. Since the Red Sox are currently battling for Wild Card status with the Minnesota Twins (who are 1.5 games behind the White Sox), if the Red Sox win the series they will retain/increase their chances for playoffs and the White Sox may drop beneath Minnesota in the A.L. Central. If the White Sox win the series Boston may lose their Wild Card spot to Minnesota, assuming that Minnesota is able to win their next few games. Tonight the Red Sox face the White Sox in game one of a three game series. Ace Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka will face Javier Vazquez. Game starts at 7:05 p.m. EDT.
