Tigers fall to White Sox

The Detroit Tigers fell behind early and could not recover Wednesday night as they lost to the Chicago White Sox 5-1.  Justin Verlander gave up a 3-run homer to Jim Thome in the 1st inning and seemed to be too much for Detroit to overcome.  The Tigers offense managed just five hits on one run, as they had no answer for John Danks or the Sox bullpen.  Detroit’s only run came in the 7th inning on a Gary Sheffield RBI single.  Chicago added two runs in the eighth inning thanks to an Alexei Ramirex RBI single with the bases loaded.  Verlander got his 12th loss of the year as he pitched 7 2/3rds innings allowing six hits, three walks and five runs while striking out eight. The Tigers fell to 8 1/2 games behind the Sox in the AL Central and will look to gain some ground and avoid a sweep in the series finale Thursday night.
