The Detroit Tigers returned twenty-two of twenty-five players from the World Series roster. Of those 3, 2 were gone from the organization. The three were OUT Alexis Gómez, whom the team did not tender a deal for, pitcher Jamie Walker, who signed with the Baltimore Orioles as a free agent, and IN Ramon Santiago, who started the season in the team’s AAA affiliate Toledo. The Detroit Tigers are well-positioned with 2 players, Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin, ranked in the top ten of Baseball America’s 2007 Top-Hundred Prospects.
The Tigers’ 2007 season started off with the team trying to win the AL Central Division, a task which they missed out on in 2006. However, they won the Wild Card and the AL Pennant.
After the Tigers’ trip to the last season’s World Series that ended with a defeat to the Cardinals Detroit started the offseason by trading pitchers Kevin Whelan, Humberto Sanchez, and Anthony Claggett to the Yankees for outfielder and hitter Gary Sheffield. They also re-signed several players from the previous season’s team; OUT Craig Monroe, 1B Sean Casey, 2B Omar Infante, LHP Nate Robertson, and RHP Fernando Rodney all returned with the Detroit Tigers for this season.
On June 12, 2007, Justin Verlander threw a no-hitter against the Brewers, winning the match 4-0. This was the first no-hitter by a Tiger since 1984, when Jack Morris did it. On June 11, the Tigers optioned right-handed pitcher Aquilino Lopez to Triple-A Toledo.
