Florida Marlins Season Preview

After the previous 2006 season, the Florida Marlins became the first club in the MLB history to climb above .500% after being twenty games under. Florida accomplished this while being the youngest team and having the lowest payroll in the MLB. In 2006, the Florida Marlins declined San Antonio's offer to accept the stadium funding proposal. That meant that the team was going to stay in South Florida. The MLB President Bob DuPuy informed San Antonio about the denial; however, he stated the possibility of the team’s relocation in the future.

Shortly after the 2006 season came to the end, the Florida Marlins manager Joe Girardi was fired. Within a few hours, Fredi González was hired to replace his position signing a 3-year deal. At the end of October 2006, pitchers Matt Herges and Brian Moehler and first baseman Wes Helms left the franchise to become free agents. On October 29, 2006, Joe Borowski left for free agency as well. However, Florida left the door open for Borowski to return. On December 29, 2006, the Florida Marlins signed a one-year deal with infielder Aaron Boone.

On January 4, 2007, the franchise proceeded with the changes in the rooster. Infielders Joe Dillon, John Gall, Zach Sorensen, Jason Wood, Scott Seabol; outfielders Alex Sanchez, Alejandro De Aza, Brett Carroll, Nick Trzesniak; catchers Chris Ashby, Brett Hayes, Brad Davis, Paul Hoover; right-handed pitchers Ryan Tucker, Chris Volstad, Roy Corcoran, Jacob Marceaux, Nate Field, Lee Gardner, Mike Koplove, Wes Obermueller, Eddy Rodriguez, Gabby Hernandez, Jimmy Serrano; and left-handed pitchers Aaron Thompson, Sean West, Chris George signed deals and were invited to spring training.

On January 5, the Florida Marlins signed a Minor League deal with outfielder Chad Hermansen. On January 12, right-handed pitcher Felix Rodriguez agreed to play for the Marlins. A few days later, the franchise resigned Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Olivo to one-year deals.
