The Houston Astros are up and ready for the 2008 season. Recently, the powers that be awarded Brandon Backe, Ty Wigginton, and Dave Borkowski one-year contracts. They started their spring training campaign with a bang, and will be starting their season against the San Diego Padres on March 31 on the Padres’ home turf. After that, they hope to conclude the season with one final game against the Atlanta Braves at the Minute Maid Park before hopefully entering the playoffs. The Astros are looking forward to a bright season before them with the changes they have made with their current roster.
After their World Series loss to the White Sox in the 2004 season, the Houston Astros have done drastic changes to their lineup. In the 2007 season, they had a terrible trade decision when they opted to trade Willy Taveras, Taylor Buchholz, and Jason Hirsh to the Rockies for pitchers Jason Jennings and Miguel Asencio. This turned out to be a bad move as Taveras developed his game and Hirsh had a good rookie season while Jennings was injured and rendered ineffective for the team’s performance.
As the 2008 season draws close, the Houston Astros are hoping to start the season with a bang. They are positive that their decision to acquire Shawn Chacon in February isn’t a completely futile one. With his 1-year, $2 million contract, the #1 pitcher has had a history of playing with the Colorado Rockies, the NY Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates prior to joining the Astros. The eager Chacon is not afraid to be given relief roles again, and is glad for the opportunity to play with the Astros. Perhaps his tenacious spirit is just what the team needs to win the coming 2008 season after all.
