It breaks down to a really easy formula for the Yankees at this point: Win. With only 32 games left while being 5 games behind the A.L. Wild Card Berth, winning is all that matters. If they don't, they will find themselves without postseason play for the first time since 1993. But they will control their own destiny. 12 of the remaining 32 games will be played against division leader Tampa Bay or wild card leader Boston Red Sox, six games against each. While most fans and experts agree that hoping to win the division is a lofty goal this late in the season, they still believe that winning the wild card berth is very attainable. What propitious timing! The Yankees will host a three game series against Boston from the 26th-28th of August, their next three games. A clean sweep of the Red Sox would place them in very good standing, only two games behind Wild Card standing, assuming Minnesota falters as well. Andy Pettitte will start opposite Tim Wakefield this Tuesday night, in hopes of ignited the Yankees sweep train.
