The Pittsburgh Pirates have had quite a history since their inception into the National League of baseball in 1887. The Pittsburgh franchise went through many names before coming up with one that stuck. Originally Pittsburgh named its team the Alleghenies, which most believe is either a county, river or mountain range, then around 1890 the team moved on to be called the Innocents, it wasnt until the end of the 1800 that the Pittsburgh pirates name finally found a home. The pirates name was discovered from the using by the Philadelphia Athletics when the Pirates took the highly respected second baseman, Lou Berbauer.
In the early 1900 the Pittsburgh Pirates, with manager Fred Clarke, lost the first World Series to ever be played in the year 1903 to Boston. The Pirates finally won their first World Series against the Detroit Tigers in 1909. Their next world series win came in 1925 against the Washington Senators and then they lost in 1927 to the New York Yankees. The Pirates didnt have another winning season until 1958 when their manager changed to Danny Murtaugh. Danny is actually recognized as the man who came up with the closer, used by pitcher Elroy Face to close games. 1960 brought the Pirates baseball history that will never be forgotten. In the World Series against the Yankees, after losing 3 games by more than 10 runs and winning 3 more, the Pirates won game 7 with Bill Mazeroski in a walk-off home run. The 1960s also brought the Pittsburgh Pirates Roberto Clemente, who is credited as one of baseballs all-time hitters.
After the tragic death of Clemente in 1972, the Pirates took on We are Family as their theme song, grabbed Chuck Tanner as new Manger, and took on Omar Moreno and Dave parker to play in place of Clemente and Steven Blass. After all these changes, the Pittsburgh Pirates went on to with their fifth World series game in 1979. The 1980s and early 90s were a pitfall for this team as Cam Bonifay as manager started to pay contract players more than the rookies who were holding the team.
As the new millennium hit, everything changed. In 2001 The Pirates opened PNC Park, which has been called the best park is baseball especially because of its view of the Pittsburgh skyline. Because of the small amount of money the team has, many of its star players moved to teams that offered bigger salaries. In 2005, the pirates held the youngest roster in baseball because the Pirates pulled up 14 players from the younger leagues. 2006 Brought out new Manager Jim Tracy to coach this Central National League. Although they are having a less than stellar season, the Pirates have had to privilege of hosting five Major League Baseball All-Star Games.
