Rays News

Role Players Keeping Rays in Race

After a productive month of May that saw the club win an AL East-best 18 games, the Tampa Bay Rays experienced a rocky start to June before weathering the storm to remain within five games of the division lead through June 16. Corner infielders Evan Longoria (.306 batting average, 14 home runs) and James Loney (.301 average, 35 RBI) have put up their expected stellar numbers, but it has been the production of the role players that has the Rays in contention as the season nears its half-way point. Light-hitting catcher Jose Lobaton has come on strong as of late, posting a .344 batting average in June, while second baseman Ben Zobrist is hitting a robust .333 since the month began.

The second half of June may go a long way towards deciding Tampa Bay’s ultimate fate in the AL East, as the next three series consist of 11 games in 10 days against the division-leading Boston Red Sox (June 18-19), third-place New York Yankees (June 21-23), and red-hot Toronto Blue Jays (June 24-26). The division race will only heat up with 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner David Price eyeing a late-June or early-July return to the rotation, so reserve your spot inside Tropicana Field today by purchasing Rays tickets from Vivid Seats.

Rays Remain Competitive in Stacked AL East

As has become the norm when it comes to the East Division of the American League, the race to the top will be quite a battle once again this season. Despite the challenging slate and some bumps in the road, the Tampa Bay Rays are just five games out of first as of May 28, with several players on track to contribute to a winning season. With last year’s Cy Young Award winner, David Price, on the disabled list for the first time in his five-year career, the Rays have relied on consistent offensive production to key the attack. James Loney and Evan Longoria have been a solid one-two punch for the squad, as Loney leads in batting average (.335) and on-base percentage (.398), while Longoria has tallied 62 hits and 107 bases through games as of May 27.

A bevy of games remain in the season to see Tampa Bay in action, so scan the listings of Rays tickets to secure a seat at Tropicana Stadium this season. Following a road stint that will take the team to Miami, Cleveland, and Detroit, the Rays will be back at home to host the Baltimore Orioles (June 7-9), Boston Red Sox (June 10-12), and Kansas City Royals (June 13-16).

2013 Rays Re-tooling Squad to Claim AL East

Last year the Rays finished 3rd in the AL East, though their 90-72 record was nothing to be ashamed of. This year, the team is hoping they can bash their way back into the playoffs with plenty of new additions that should help them contend in a vicious AL East. So far, the Rays have added to their pitching staff with Juan Carlos Oviedo and Jamey Wright; brought in batting and defensive help with outfielders Wil Myers and Jason Bourgeois; and shored up the defense with infielders James Loney, Yunel Escobar, and Kelly Johnson. Though the squad lost some key players in the offseason, most notably James Shields, B.J. Upton, and Carlos Pena, Manager Joe Maddon always has this team uber-competitive. Once again we can expect the Rays to be in it through the end.

Looking at the 2013 Rays schedule, the team is for an opening day showdown against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday, April 2nd. It will be a great April for fans hoping to catch the Rays at Tropicana Field early on, as Tampa Bay is set to invite squads like the Cleveland Indians, Oakland Athletics, and New York Yankees all in the opening month. Star pitcher David Price will be looking to make it back-to-back Cy Young Awards, so make sure to purchase your 2013 Tampa Bay Rays tickets to smell the fresh cut grass and experience a fantastic day at the ballpark.
