Though the Atlanta Braves have maintained a steady hold on the NL East, the Washington Nationals have also kept up the pace to lock in the division’s second slot with a little more than half the season still to go. So far, Washington has relied heavily on its defensive talent, specifically on the mound. As of June 18, the team ranks seventh in the MLB with an ERA of 3.62, while individually, the Nationals boast the seventh and eighth best ERAs in the National League—Jordan Zimmerman has posted a 2.44, while Stephen Strasburg harbors a 2.50. Zimmerman is also tied for third in the MLB with nine wins in 11 quality starts this season, and relief pitcher Rafael Soriano is tied for eighth with 18 saves on the year.
Offensively, the squad is bolstered by shortstop Ian Desmond, who leads the team with a .286 BA, 34 RBI, 73 hits, and 122 total bases. Bryce Harper is also packing power behind the plate, with 43 hits and 12 home runs in just 44 games played.
Find Nationals tickets on sale now for contests when the Colorado Rockies (June 20-23), Arizona Diamondbacks (June 25-27), and Milwaukee Brewers (July 1-4) pass through town in the coming weeks.
With the second month of the season coming to a close, the Washington Nationals are gearing up for a new stretch of games to boost their position in the standings, as well as the return of star outfielder, Bryce Harper, who is back after briefly being sidelined with an injury. Despite his absence, Harper still leads the team with a .287 batting average and 12 home runs, though the offense has been able to rely on several other performers as well. Center fielder Denard Span has compiled a .272 batting average to go along with 52 hits, and third baseman Ryan Zimmerman has recorded a team-best 24 RBI. On the pitching front, Jordan Zimmermann owns an impressive 8-2 mark and 1.71 ERA in 73.2 innings pitched for the Nationals.
In the next few weeks, the Nationals schedule will become statistically easier after early-season games pitted the squad against some of the best in the National League. Plenty of Nationals tickets remain to see this team build toward another postseason appearance. Catch the team in action during upcoming home games versus the New York Mets (June 4-6) and Minnesota Twins (June 7-9).
Washington made the leap to the upper-echelon of National League last season when they clinched the franchise’s first postseason berth and finished with the best record in the MLB (98-64). They ultimately fell in five games to the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS, but the track to a successful future was already set in place with stars like Stephen Strasburg, Bryce Harper, and Gio Gonzalez. To ensure the momentum carries on, the Nationals made some key acquisitions in the offseason. First, Denard Span was acquired from Minnesota for pitcher Alex Meyer, which allows Harper to move to left field while Jayson Werth stays at right. Then, the Nats shored up their pitching by signing potential ace Dan Haren. They also signed right-handed reliever Rafael Soriano, who’ll serve as the squad’s new closer to help them cash in on their offensive output.
The Nationals will look to get off to a great start and jump back to the top of the National League, and everything is set to begin on April 1st against the Miami Marlins at Nationals Park. The game is set to kick off at 1:05 pm ET. Also during the month, the Nationals will play home games against the Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, and Cincinnati Reds. With the new acquisitions, it looks like this could be the year that the Nats break through and head to the World Series, so get your Washington Nationals tickets now and be there to see them live from day one.
It’s been a long time coming, but at last, all of the pieces appear to finally be in place for the Washington Nationals. Not since the days as the Montreal Expos has the franchise competed in the postseason and even more astounding is how long it has been since Washington, D.C., hosted an MLB playoff game (79 years to be exact).
While obviously the entire squad has helped contribute to the success, two players in particular have undoubtedly played a major role in the upsurge. Bryce Harper has remained one of the team leaders in most offensive categories, while Stephen Strasburg finished his first full MLB season with a 15-6 record.
