Baltimore Orioles 07 Season Preview

The Baltimore Orioles (the Eastern Division of the American League in the Major League Baseball) are actively preparing for the new 2007 season, and thus from the end of 2006 they have been making some changes to their team rooster. On December 18, 2006, the Baltimore Orioles announced that they had resigned Chris Gomez to a one-year deal for the upcoming 2007 season. It will be Gomez’s third season with the Baltimore Orioles. In September, he had his career-high 18-game hitting streak, hitting in all eighteen games, and thus led all American League batters with a .437 batting average. He missed two months last season when he was hit by a pitch and had his left hand injured. However, he returned to the active roster after the All-Star break.

On January 3, 2007, the Baltimore Orioles inked a three-year contract with Aubrey Huff. Two days later, the team signed Daniel Cabrera, Chris Waters, Jose Acevedo, Steve Green, Victor Moreno, Ruddy Yan, Cory Doyne, Francis Beltran, Brandon Sing, J.R. House; and invited non-roster Fredy Deza to spring training. On January 12, the Orioles acquired Jim Miller and Jason Burch from Colorado in exchange for Rodrigo Lopez; and signed a one-year contract with Todd Williams. Fortunately, there are no injuries yet this season.

In all, the 2006 World Baseball Classic, the Baltimore Orioles contributed more baseball players than any other major team of the league, with 11 players representing their home nations.

Currently, the team is headed by Sam Perlozzo (manager), Tom Trebelhorn (bench coach), Sam Mejias (first base coach), and Juan Samuel (third base coach).
