About the Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are a professional baseball team which plays in the eastern division of the American League in Major League Baseball (MLB). Their eastern division opponents include; theNew York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and the Toronto Blue Jays. The Boston Red Sox play home games at Fenway Park in Boston, MA.

Boston became one of the original members of the newly formed American league in 1901, playing as the Boston Pilgrims. They won their first World Series in 1903, and later changed their name to the Boston Red Sox in 1908. The Red Sox went on to win their fifth World Series in 1918 with the help of a young star named Babe Ruth. Ruth was later sold to the much-hated Yankees in 1919, starting what would be known as "the cure of the bambino" and 85 years without a title.

The following years were unkind to Red Sox who were able to come close, and sometimes make the postseason, only to be foiled by the Yankees all too often. Many of baseball's greatest players played in Boston during these years, and Boston even made it back to the World Series in 1946, but lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. Greats like Bobby Doerr, Dennis Eckersley, Wade Boggs, and Smoky Joe Wood were all MLB standouts during their time with the Red Sox. Boston has also been so lucky to enjoy the services of hall of fame members, and baseball legends like Lefty Grove, Cy Young, and Ted Williams.

The Red Sox were finally able to break "the curse" as they came back from a 3 game deficit to beat the Yankees in the ALCS and went on to sweep the Cardinals on their way to their first World Series title in over 85 years. With the loss of Nomar Garciaparra, and more recently, Pedro Martinez, the Red Sox were needed to make some big moves if they wanted to stay on top in the future, and they did just that. Boston signed pitchers David Wells and Matt Clement who should more than make up for the absence of Pedro. Also, the red Sox went out and signed free agent shortstop Edgar Renteria who had a breakout year with the Cardinals in 2004. With the core of their world championship team intact and a few key upgrades, the Red Sox look poised to make another run for a title in 2005 and the years to come.

Fenway Park

The Boston red Sox play their home games at Fenway park in Boston, Massachusetts. Fenway Park is the oldest ballpark in all of Major League Baseball. Fires in 1926 and 1933 destroyed many parts of the ballpark, but Fenway was finally repaired for the 1934 season with a new look. The wooden left field wall was replaced by sheet metal, and when it was painted over in green in 1947, the infamous "Green Monster" was born. Minor changes and upgrades took place throughout the years, but a lot remains unchanged since the original post-fire renovation. Fenway maybe MLB's most storied ballpark, and catching a Red Sox game is always a pleasure for any ticket holder.
