With the final cuts of this spring, the Red Sox in the 2007 season will carry thirteen pitchers and twelve position players. The starting lineup of the team includes Kevin Youkilis, Julio Lugo, Jason Varitek, Mike Lowell, Dustin Pedroia, Coco Crisp, David Ortiz, Manny Ramírez, J.D. Drew. The bench now includes infielder Alex Cora, catcher Doug Mirabelli, outfielder Wily Mo Peña, and Eric Hinske. The starting rotation consists of Curt Schilling, Tim Wakefield, Josh Beckett, Julian Tavarez, and Daisuke Matsuzaka, with a bullpen of Jonathan Papelbon, Brendan Donnelly, Mike Timlin, Joel Piñeiro, Hideki Okajima, J.C. Romero, and Javier López, and Kyle Snyder.
In late April 2007, J. D. Drew, Mike Lowell, Manny Ramirez, and Jason Varitek hit 4 consecutive home runs in the 3rd inning. It was the first time in the team’s history this feat has occurred. All 4 home runs were off of ten pitches from Chase Wright of the Yankees in his second ML start and his 4th above Single-A ball. Additionally notable, J. D. Drew, then with the Los Angeles Dodgers, contributed to a 4 consecutive home run series as had Tito Francona, Boston manager Terry Francona’s father.
On June 11, 2007, the team activated left-handed pitcher Jon Lester from the fifteen-day disabled list and optioned the player to Triple-A Pawtucket. Two days before that, the Red Sox activated right-handed pitcher Mike Timlin from the fifteen-day disabled list and designated left-handed pitcher J.C. Romero for assignment.
