The start of the previous season was not at all successful: the team set a franchise record for futile offense by scoring only 13 runs in 11 games. The Cubs ended the season with low 0.407 (66 wins versus 96 losses) and became sixth in NL Central. The Chicago Cubs started the 2007 season with making some changes to the team’s rooster. On January 3, 2007, LHP Neal Cotts signed a one-year deal with the Cubs. On January 9, the franchise welcomed RHP Sean Gallagher, RHP Adam Harben, RHP Randy Wells, LHP Ryan O'Malley, OF Tyler Colvin, LHP Carmen Pignatiello, C Jake Fox, 2B Eric Patterson, 3B Casey McGehee, IF Mike Kinkade, and OF Chris Walker to its spring training. On January 12, INF Tomas Perez agreed to a Minor League deal. The following day, the Chicago Cubs signed a deal with OF Alex Ochoa and invited him to spring training. On January 16, LHP Will Ohman agreed a two-year contract with the franchise.
Last year’s starter Juan Pierre signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and thus, the Cubs signed Alfonso Soriano for eight years (a $136 million deal), but he is most likely to play right. So the team’s manager Lou Piniella needed someone to play center. He decided to sign right-handed pitcher Carlos Zambrano, who will be Opening Day starter in the 2007 season. Piniella is also eager to see Mark Prior and Kerry Wood in his team.
The franchise avoided arbitration signing the left-hander Will Ohman to a two-year $2.5 million contract on January 16, 2007. Zambrano, who earned $6.5 million in 2006, was asking for $15.5 million in 2007. However, the Chicago Cubs offered only $11.025 million.
