Cleveland Indians Season Preview

At the end of December 2006, it was announced that the Cleveland Indians, also nicknamed the Tribe, would change their spring training facility from Winter Haven, situated in Florida, to Goodyear, located in Arizona, and later join the Cactus League in February 2009.

To improve the results of the previous season, the franchise started 2007 with making some changes to the team’s rooster. On January 2, the Cleveland Indians invited infielders Luis Rivas and Keith Ginter to spring training. On January 4, the franchise signed a one-year deal a mutual option for 2008 with right-handed pitcher Keith Foulke and designated right-handed pitcher Brian Sikorski for assignment. On January 5, the team made the majority of changes signing Armando Camacaro, Javi Herrera, and Jason Stanford to Minor League contracts. Max Ramirez, Wyatt Toregas, Aaron Laffey, Chuck Lofgren, Scott Lewis, Tony Sipp, Trevor Crowe, Adam Miller, and Asdrubal Cabrera were invited to spring training. On January 15, the Cleveland Indians proceeded with signing right-handed pitcher Matt Miller to a one-year deal. The following day, the team signed a one-year deal with Rafael Betancourt.

Jason Michaels and the Cleveland Indians avoided arbitration and reached a preliminary two-year deal worth $4.25 million that would give him $2 million in 2007 and $2.15 million in 2008, including a $199 thousand signing bonus. The contract also includes a 2009 option worth $2.6 million. Reliever Rafael Betancourt agreed to a one-year $840 thousand contract for 2007.
