New York Mets Season Preview

The New York Mets 2006 division title ended the Atlanta Braves' streak of fourteen consecutive NL East division titles. The franchise became the first team besides Atlanta to win the NL East since 1994. The Mets had the best record in their league with 97 wins and 65 losses. The most notable free agent, who signed a contract with the franchise, was veteran OF Moises Alou. He will replace Cliff Floyd in left field.

The New York Mets are planning to move to a new stadium. The construction of the new sports facility began in 2006. It is scheduled to open before the 2009 season.

After the 2006 season, the Mets became the first team in MLB history to win 8 consecutive road games and score in the first innings of each game. They also set a new franchise record by scoring eleven runs in one innings. The New York Mets became the 3rd team to hit 6 grand slams within a month (Carlos Beltrán hit three slams, José Valentín hit two and Cliff Floyd hit one). In the upcoming 2007 season, the New York Mets will start playing on April 1, in St. Louis. In June, New York will play nineteen consecutive games against 2006 playoff teams, facing the Tigers, Athletics, Dodgers, Twins, Yankees, and Cardinals.

On January 5, 2007, INF/OF David Newhan signed a one-year deal with the Mets. On January 11, another player signed with New York, RHP Duaner Sanchez. On January 16, LHP Scott Schoeneweis signed a three-year deal, and RHP Jorge Sosa inked a one-year contract.
