New York Yankees 2007 Preview

Founded in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1901, the New York Yankees are a Major League Baseball team, based in New York’s Bronx (from 1903). The team is often nicknamed the Bronx Bombers. From 1923 to the present, the team has played at the Yankee Stadium.

On October 11, 2006, a tragedy struck the New York Yankees, when pitcher Cory Lidle died after the plane he was piloting crashed into an apartment building on Manhattan's Upper East Side. In fact, he was the second active Yankee, who died in a crash of his own private plane, following the death of Thurman Munson in 1979.

The changes for the upcoming 2007 season started with the re-signing of Andy Pettitte to a one-year contract in December. He is a former Yankee, who left the team after 2003. January started with trading of Randy Johnson to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for reliever Luis Vizcaíno. On January 3, 2007, the New York Yankees signed left-handed pitcher Ben Koslowski and invited him to spring training. Two days later, the team signed a one-year deal with Doug Mientkiewicz. On January 9, the New York Yankees acquired RHP Luis Vizcaino, RHP Steven Jackson, RHP Ross Ohlendorf, and SS Alberto Gonzalez in exchange for LHP Randy Johnson and cash considerations. On January 12, INF Andy Cannizaro, INF Eric Duncan, INF Angel Chavez, C Raul Chavez, RHP Steven Jackson, RHP Tyler Clippard, OF Brett Gardner, RHP Phil Hughes, C Peter Pilittere, C Ben Davis, C Todd Pratt, RHP Kevin Whelan, RHP Ross Ohlendorf, C Omir Santos, INF Marcos Vechionacci, RHP Steven White, and some other players were invited to spring training.
