2013 MLS Playoff Schedule to Accommodate World Cup Qualifying

In anticipation of the forthcoming World Cup qualifying playoffs in November, the MLS announced that 2013 postseason matches will in turn be scheduled around the international events. Knockout Rounds will take place from Oct. 30-31, followed by the first (Nov. 2-3) and second (Nov. 6-7) legs of the Conference Semifinals. Then, in the Conference Finals, the first leg is scheduled for Nov. 9-10, but the second leg will not come until Nov. 23-24, after each leg of the UEFA World Cup qualifying playoff draw has been completed. The grand finale of it all, the 2013 MLS Cup, will take place on Dec. 7 at the home venue of the better-seeded team.

Ten squads in all will compete for a spot in the MLS Cup, including five from each conference. Eastern Conference teams include the No. 1 New York Red Bulls, No. 2 Sporting Kansas City, No. 3 New England Revolution, No. 4 Houston Dynamo, and No. 5 Montreal Impact. Representing the Western Conference is the top-seeded Portland Timbers, No. 2 Real Salt Lake, No. 3 Los Angeles Galaxy, No. 4 Seattle Sounders, and No. 5 Colorado Rapids. The top three seeds from each conference receive byes into the semifinals, while the four and five seeds will compete in the Knockout Round. The LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo have both advanced to the MLS Cup in each of the last two seasons, with the Galaxy prevailing on both occasions.
