Schallibaum in to Coach 2013 Impact

After just one season as Vancouver’s head honcho, it was clear to both the Impact and former head coach, Jesse Marsch, that there needed to be a change, so the team decided to go in a new direction by hiring veteran coach, Marco Schallibaum for 2013. The 50-year-old Zurich, Switzerland, native has been a coach since 1995, with stints at the helm for Super League clubs like Young Boys Bern and Servette Geneva. The former defender earned 31 caps for Switzerland as a player, scoring one goal, and he’s been brought on to change the philosophy of the club. His goal is to make the team think and play quicker, while also fostering more touch passing. So far, the practice style has been much more fast-paced, including one drill that shortens the field to 35 yards in order to force the squad to make better decisions in traffic.

Last season, Montreal finished in seventh place in the Eastern Conference, but with the new style, Impact fans can hope for plenty of improvement. With the help of Captain Davy Arnaud, Patrice Bernier, Allesandro Nesta, and newcomers like Blake Smith, Andrea Pisanu, and Andres Romero, Schallibaum should have a good going in his first season. The 2013 Impact schedule has the team opening up the season on the road against the Seattle Sounders on March 2nd, and they’ll make their first appearance at Stade Saputo on March 16th against Toronto FC. In the early going, Montreal will face a bevy of splendid teams, including the New York Red Bulls (3/23), Sporting Kansas City (3/30), and the Los Angeles Galaxy (4/6). Now is a great time to purchase 2013 Montreal Impact tickets to see the new regime live, so get yours today.
