The team took the most shots in all MLS, but they still ranked 12th overall in scoring. Hopefully for Sporting fans, that’s all about to change, as the club signed a proven scorer in Argentine-born, Ecuadorian forward Claudio Bieler. The 28-year-old comes over via an undisclosed transfer fee from Ecuador’s LDU Quito, and he’ll become Sporting's lone designated player. Over his career, he’s spent time playing in Argentina, Chile, and Ecuador, and last season he notched 20 goals to finish second in scoring in Ecuador's Serie A. Overall, his 71 goals for LDU Quito is a club record. It’s expected that coach Peter Vermes will keep Bieler solely at the center forward position of his 4-3-3 attack.
Sporting KC fans should know what they’ve got in Bieler pretty quickly, as the 2013 Sporting KC schedule has the team opening up the season on the road against the Philadelphia Union on March 2nd. Afterwards, they’ll come home to Sporting Park to play the Chicago Fire on March 16th. And there is a host of marquee games on the horizon as spring rolls on, including matches against DC United (4/5), the New York Red Bulls (4/17), and the Los Angeles Galaxy (4/20).
