Nelson Tapped as 2013 Toronto FC Coach

After finishing last season at the bottom of Major League Soccer with just 23 points, Toronto FC figured that it was time to shake things up, so they fired Head Coach Paul Mariner and replaced him with Ryan Nelson. The hire came as quite a shock to many, as Nelson will be the youngest head coach in TFC history, and he’s currently under contract as a defender for Queens Park Rangers in the English Premier League until the end of June. Nevertheless, the 35-year-old New Zealand native was highly regarded by Toronto FC’s president and general manager, Kevin Payne, since he captained D.C. United to its fourth championship while Payne was D.C.’s executive in 2004. Nelson will become the Reds’ eighth head coach in six years, but the club is hoping that his experience with championship-caliber squads will help him remain as the long-term answer.

As a player, Nelson has shined with QPR this season, and since 1999, he’s earned more than 40 caps for New Zealand’s All Whites national team. He also captained New Zealand at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, 2010 FIFA World Cup, and 2012 London Olympics. Reds fans looking to get a look at the new regime won’t have to wait long, as the 2013 Toronto FC schedule has the team opening up against the Vancouver Whitecaps on March 2nd. The first home game at BMO Field will come against Sporting Kansas City on March 9th. From there, the Reds will have a bevy of tough matchups on tap, including showdowns against the Los Angeles Galaxy (3/30), FC Dallas (4/6), and New York Red Bulls (4/27). Get your hands on 2013 Toronto FC tickets today and be there as Nelson and the Reds put their best foot forward from day one.
