The Brickyard 400, or the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, is the NASCAR (the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) Nextel Cup race. It is held every year at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. It is a quite old speedway, which was opened in 1909.
The speedways seating capacity is more than 257 thousand spectators. It has the largest seating capacity in the world. The track shape is oval with a combined road course; its length is 2 and a half miles (or 4 km) in its oval part and 2.6 miles (or 4.2 km) of the combined road course. The size of the speedway remains unchanged.
The race was first held in 1994, but the first ten years it was called simply the Brickyard 400. The overall distance equals to 400 miles (or 644 km). The total number of laps is 160. In April 1993 the president of the speedway and the president of NASCAR announced their decision about the Brickyard 400, which was to be held on the sixth of August 1994. On the 16th and 17th of August 1993 35 teams participated in the speedway testing.
From 1994 the Brickyard 400 was televised live on ABC Sports. The race was traditionally held every first Saturday in August. From 2001 the NBC Company gained the right to broadcast the race (it was a 2.4 billion contract).
In 1994 Jeff Gordon became the first winner of the Brickyard 400. He took a 613 thousand prize. The 2006 winner of the race was Jeffery Michael Gordon. He became the champion of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series four times (in 1995, 1997, 1998, and 2001). In 1993 he was named the Rookie of the year, and in 1998 he was awarded with one of the NASCARs Fifty Greatest Drivers title.
The Allstate 400 at the Brickyard 2006 winner is Jimmie Johnson, who is a three-time race championship (all in 2006). Currently he is driving Chevrolet. For his victory he was paid more than 450 thousand dollars.
From 2007 the Brickyard 400 will be broadcast by the ESPN (the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network), as another 4.48 billion deal was signed. The race will be held at the end of July. One can also follow the race on the radio, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network. Beginning from 2007 Mike King is the announcer.
