About The Budweiser Shootout

The Budweiser Shootout is a NASCAR Nextel Cup Series event, which takes place at Daytona International Speedway in February of each year. It is usually planned one weekend before the Daytona 500 race. It started as the Busch Clash and originally represented a fifty-mile sprint. The race carried its original name from 1979 until 1997, after which it was renamed into Bud Shootout for two years, and only in 2001, Budweiser Shootout race got the present name.

In 2003, the format of the race had to undergo certain changes. The present version of the race envisages two periods of the race: the first one is a short 20-lap period, which is followed by a ten-minute break. After the break, the race continues with a 50-lap period, which stipulates, that every car has to make a green flag pit stop.

The Budweiser Shootout, just like the Nextel All-Star Challenge race, which takes place at Lowe's Motor Speedway in May, brings no points to the champion, however a substantial money prize. This fact usually results in an all-out racing style not typical for regular races, in which one blunder can seriously spoil the whole season. Nevertheless, because the fields are smaller, serious accidents, which are usually seen at the Daytona 500 race, rarely occur. The smaller field gives a chance to take part to the pole winners from the previous season and the former race champions. The starting lineup is decided during a random draw, unlike most other races, in which records are important.

The rules of the race stipulate that the racers, winning the pole prize must have an Anheuser-Busch decal, or the corporate logo attached to the racing car in case the driver is less than 21 years old at the time to earn a place at the Budweiser Shootout. When the car does not have a sticker, the Budweiser Pole Prize is given to the next car eligible. However, the racer, who gets the Budweiser Pole Prize, does not receive a Shootout spot.

The most recent 2006 winner of Budweiser Shootout is Denny Hamlin, who is known as the first ever rookie to become the champion in this race. Previously, he had received a victory in the pole at Phoenix during a part-time ride in 2005.
