Johnson Seeking Second Career Win at Coke Zero 400
The 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series has belonged to Jeff Gordon thus far, who as of June 13 boasts a modest lead in the standings, though has captured just one race win thus far. The most recent competition at Daytona International Speedway, the Daytona 500, was won by Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who will be seeking his first-ever win at the Coke Zero 400 when action gets underway at the track on July 5. Jimmie Johnson, meanwhile, will enter the race as the defending champion after winning for the first time in 2013. All three drivers have consistently ranked in the top 10 of the Sprint Cup standings, and as of mid-June, occupy three of the first five slots. Through 14 starts, Gordon’s 498 points is good for first, followed by Matt Kenseth (482), Earnhardt, Jr. (476), Johnson (475), and Brad Keselowski (448).
Johnson’s Coke Zero 400 win last year was especially notable as for the first time since Bobby Allison in 1982, both the Daytona 500 and Coke Zero 400 were won by the same driver in the same season. Should he take the competition once again, he’ll be the first since Tony Stewart in 2005 and 2006 to repeat, though still a few wins away from tying David Pearson’s record five victories at the summertime Daytona event.
