Dodge/Mart 350 Background Information

The Dodge/Mart 350 is a NASCAR Cup series race. It is held annually at the Infineon Raceway. It is a Nextel Cup race. It is usually held on a non-oval track, which makes twelve turns over the track of 3 km and 220 m (2 miles). The race owes its name to its sponsors Dodge and Save Mart. The total distance of the race is 219 miles, or 350 km. The number of laps the cars have to go equals to 110.

The Dodge/Mart 350 was first held in 1989. During its seventeen-year history it changed its name and its length as well. Since 1989 till 1991 the race was called the Banquet Frozen Foods 300. Later, in 1992 it changed its name to the Save Mart 300K, in 1993 – to Save Mart Supermarkets 300K, from 1994 till 1997 its name was Save Mart Supermarkets 300, and since 1998 till 2000, after changing the sponsor, it was called Save Mart/Kragen 350.

In the year of 1991 Ricky Rudd was the first to come to the finish line, but he was penalized for five seconds, and thus, Davey Allison, who finished second, became the winner of the race. In 1998 the circuit was shortened to 1.95 mile course. In 2001 the length was modified to 2 miles.

From 1989 to 2001 there were only thirty-four pit stalls, so the teams had to share them. Lately, the Gilligans Island was constructed. It contained pit stalls for all the teams, which participate in the race. After having qualified 36th- 43rd the cars are assigned to their pit stalls. The length of the additional pit was less than the major pit road; the cars had to wait from fifteen up to 20 seconds to continue the race. There was another problem with the Gilligans Island. Its area was not very large and thus it was always packed with the crews. If someone dripped out of the race the team could not get out of the garage until the whole race was over. In 2002 the main road was modified and now theres place for at least forty-three race participants.

Since 2001 till 2006 the Fox Company had the rights to broadcast the Dodge/Mart 350 race. But from 2007 till 2014 it will be televised on TNT.

The 2006 winner of the race was Jeffery Michael Gordon. He became the champion of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series four times. The 2006 Dodge/Mart 350 race was the ninth one which he won during his long and very successful career.
