Pep Boys Auto 500 : Brief History

The Pep Boys Auto 500 is the NASCAR Sprint Cup stock race held in Hampton at Atlanta Speedway, Georgia. Of the NASCAR season, the race has been listed as the ultimate race and generally the occurrence in which winner was decided from 1987 until 2001. However, the finals was decided either former to the race or when the point's leader merely began the race, collecting enough points merely by concluding last or the better.

The event of 1992 marked the introduction of Jeff Gordon and the ultimate race of Richard Petty. The race has been recognized as one amongst the supreme NASCAR races, with six drivers suitable for the Winston Cup. By leading one more lap in the race, Alan Kulwicki completed next in the pursuit and edged out the winner of the race, Bill Elliott. By a then-record border of only 10 points, the title of NASCAR Winston Cup was won by Kulwicki. In the year 2001, the event finished off as last but second one, but was planned as the term finale. Due to 9/11, there was a postponement of the New Hampshire 300 to Friday after the thanksgiving from September 16. With 2003 race as the first being the night qualifying, the race for 2002 was moved to late October in 2002.

In order to finish the race in the night, the race set up time was moved to 2:55 PM from 12:40 PM, in 2006. Due to a collide between Jeff Gordon and Jamie McMurry at the point sun sets in that particular area of the roadway, led to the desertion of the three PM start after this contest.
