The full name of the Pop Secret 400 is the Pop Secret Microwave Popcorn 400. It is a NASCAR (the
National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) Winston Cup event usually held in October. The
first race occurred in 1965. The total number of laps is 393. The distance is 400 miles (or 644 km)
long.
The corporate sponsor is the Pop Secret, which is a famous brand of popcorn, manufactured by
General Mills. The Pop Secret 400 takes place at the North Carolina Motor Speedway, which is a
racetrack. It is situated in Rockingham, North Carolina. Sometimes it is called The Rock. The
North Carolina Motor Speedway was the home to many NASCAR races from 1965 to 2004, when it was
closed. Now the Speedway is used for the NASCAR testing, television, and even movie filming.
When the Speedway was opened it looked like a flat one-mile, oval-shaped track. Later, in 1969
it was reconstructed into a D-shaped oval with high banks. In 1997 it was renamed into the North
Carolina Speedway. In 2004 it was sold to the International Speedway Corporation.
During its thirty-nine year history the race changed its name five times. The first seventeen
years it was called the American 500. The following two years it changed its name into Walter
W.Hodgdon American 500. From 1985 it was renamed into Nationwise 500. From 1987 and the following
seven years it was known as AC Delco 500. And only in 1995 the number of the miles changed, and
thus it acquired a new name AC Delco 400.
The first, 1965 winner of the Pop Secret 400 was Curtis Turner, a NASCAR driver. He was a very
successful racer. In all, he participated in 183 car races. In 1998 he was named one of the NASCARs
Fifty Greatest Drivers. Twice he was inducted to the Hall of Fame: in 1992 to the International
Motorsports Hall of Fame, and in 2006 to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.
The last Pop Secret 400 winner was Bill Elliott (in 2003). He was a part-time racer in the
NASCAR Nextel Cup series. He became the winner for the first time in 1983 in the Winston West 500
(Riverside). In 1988 Bill Elliott won the Winston Cup Championship. He wasnt only very successful
but also a very famous sportsman. Sixteen times (between the years of 1984 and 2001) he was named
the Most Popular Driver. He is also one of the fifty NASCARs Greatest Drivers.
