About The Subway Fresh 500

The Subway Fresh 500 is a NASCAR Nextel Cup Race. Stock cars participate in the race, which is held annually in Avondale, Arizona, at the Phoenix International Raceway. The first race took place on April 23, 2005. It was added to the NASCAR schedule as part of NASCAR Realignment. The latter refers to the changes that are made in the schedule of the NASCARs Nextel Cup Series.

The Subway Fresh 500 racers have to go 312 miles (or 502 km), the overall number of laps also totals 312. The corporate sponsor of the race is the Subway, which is a multinational restaurant franchise.

The Phoenix International Raceway (or simply the PIR) is a racetrack, which was opened in 1964. The track is a unique D-shaped tri-oval. The track length equals 1 mile (or 1.6 km). The seating capacity of the track is more than 76 thousand spectators. Until 2005, the Phoenix International Raceway was used for major Indy-style racing events. Nowadays it is still used by Indie Racing teams for car testing.

The first 2005 Subway Fresh 500 winner was Kurt Bush. Born in 1978, he is a NASCAR driver, who pilots the Miller Lite Dodge and the Penske Truck Rental Dodge (in the Bush Series). He won in 2002 at the Food City 500 (Bristol) for the first time. In 2003, he was the IROC (the International Race of Champions) Champion. After becoming the winner of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series in 2004, he became the first at the Food City 500 (Bristol) in 2006. Now, Kurt ranks 16th at the NEXTEL Cup.

In 2006, Kevin Harvick became the Subway Fresh 500 champion. Being an American race driver and car owner, he competes in the NASCAR Nextel Cup and the Bush Series, driving the GM Goodwrench/Reeses Chevrolet and the Coast Guard Chevrolet. Now, he is a ten-time winner of the NASCAR Nextel Cup series. He became the winner of the 2001 Cracker Barrel Old Country Store 500, the 2001 and 2002 Tropicana 400, the 2003 Brickyard 400, the 2005 Food City 500, the 2006 Subway Fresh 500, the AMD at the Glen, the Chevy Rock & Roll 400, the Sylvania 300, and the Checker Auto Parts 500. He ranks 4th at the Nextel Cup presently.
