The Sylvania 300 is a NASCAR Nextel Cup stock car race, which takes place at the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire. The Race used to be held in the middle of September. Nevertheless, the time of the race had to be changed one time in its history. It was first planned for September 16, 2001, and later had to be put off because of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. As long as the authorities did not want to cancel the race, NASCAR management made the decision to move the date of the event to the next possible date. It was rescheduled for November 23, 2001, the day right after the Thanksgiving Day. The incident represented a challenge for the tire manufacturer Goodyear to some extent, as they were not prepared to have a race in New Hampshire in November. In this month of the year there was a certain snow possibility. They brought tires, which better suited the cold climate, while NASCAR planned the race for Friday. This was to allow two available weather dates. Luckily, during the race, their concerns chased away. The race began and ended with high speeds.

The Sylvania 300 Race is famous for being the only Nextel Cup Race outside of Daytona International Speedway and Talladega to run a restrictor plate race since the implementation of the present 358 cubic inch formula. After Adam Pettys demise in the Busch Series in May, and Kenny Irwin Jr.'s demise in the Cup Series in July, NASCAR made the decision to run restrictor plates, which had already been in use at the Whelen Modified Tour race at the circuit, the 2000 Cup race, which was known as the Dura Lube 300 at the time. The addition of restrictor plates achieved the desired result and slowed down the cars greatly. However it also restricted passing so much that Jeff Burton was leading in all 300 laps. The lack of passing ruined the challenge of competition, and for Cup cars the restrictor plates were removed in the next race, the 2001 New England 300 Race.

On July 15, 2006 an official announcement was made. With regard to the announcement the corporate sponsor Sylvania signed an agreement until the year 2012. This will most probably protect the September race until the mentioned date.
