The Rise of Blake Griffin and the 2011-2012 LA Clippers
Plenty of stars have come and gone in Los Angeles Clippers history, but none have shown the promise of rookie power forward Blake Griffin. Just sixty-one games into his NBA career, Griffin already has put together a very impressive highlight tape of crowd-silencing blocks and gravity-defying dunks. The Clippers are still long shots for the Western Conference playoffs, but the team is undeniably a much improved team with #32 starting in the lineup this year. A true physical specimen, Griffin posses a hulking 6’10” 251-pound frame, but has the quickness of top level shooting guard. more
Drawing comparisons to Karl Malone and Shawn Kemp, Blake Griffin is averaging a double-double for the season, scoring 22.9 points per game and grabbing 12.5 rebounds per game. Needless to say, the Clips' rising star has heavily influenced the sale of 2011-2012 Clippers tickets.
The Clippers’ new found savior was born in 1989 in Oklahoma City. Blake became a phenom in high school playing for the team his father coached. Winning four consecutive Oklahoma state titles, Griffin attracted college offers from Duke, Illinois, North Carolina, Kansas, and Michigan State, but eventually decided to follow in his older brother Taylor’s footsteps and attend the University of Oklahoma. The McDonald’s All American and Gatorade Player of the Year had a terrific freshmen season as a Sooner, earning All-Big 12 honors. However, the future Clippers star truly made his mark in college basketball in his sophomore season in Norman. Griffin led the Sooners to a 30-6 record and a berth in the Elite Eight, while wrapping up the Naismith Player of the Year and AP National Player of the Year awards. The following June, Griffin was selected #1 overall in the NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers.
As Blake prepared for his rookie season with Los Angeles, basketball insiders were impressed with his play on the team’s summer league squad. Luck, however, was not on the Clippers’ side. Los Angeles’ highly touted rookie broke his left knee cap in a exhibition game – forcing the then 20-year-old to undergo season-ending surgery. Bidding his time on the sideline, the injured draft pick worked hard to get his body and mind ready for the next season. When the season finally rolled around, Griffin didn’t waste any time. Scoring his first NBA basket in fine fashion, Blake thundered home an alley-oop slam dunk from teammate Randy Foye.
The Clippers powerful forward hasn’t slowed down a step since announcing his arrival in the NBA. Along with fellow LA stars Eric Gordon and Chris Kaman, Griffin led the Clippers to wins over the league powers Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers. While Griffin is destined to take home the Rookie of the Year Award, the Clippers’ face of the franchise is not satisfied with individual awards. The first-year pro has continually reiterated his focus is only on winning and not the attention he receives for his high-flying dunks. Those words must be music to the ears of long-suffering LA Clippers fans. It looks like the 2011-2012 Clippers team has quite the star!
