Though they did not qualify for the National College Championship tournament last year, the Ohio State Buckeyes have not given up in the off-season. Head coach of the Buckeyes, Thad Matta, has begun to look towards the future. In mid-July, Matta announced the addition of Zisis Sarikopoulos, a 7-foot, 265-pound basketball machine. Sarikopoulos, a center from Athens, Greece, transferred to Ohio State after a year playing for the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He will have to sit out of collegiate play for one year, as stipulated by NCAA by-laws on all transfer players. However, Matta believes that the one-year off will prove most propitious to the 7-foot Greek. It will help him to develop and to mature, as he entered college at the early age of 17. After a year goes by, Matta is confident that Sarikopoulos’ physical size and presence will be a great boon to the Buckeye offensive/defensive units. Additionally, Matta looks to assistance from his 13 scholarship players, and three walk-on players. Danny Peters and Mark Titus, will be two returning walk-ons from last year that should prove to be strong leaders of the team, as well as demonstrate years of experience. This year will be another building year for the Buckeyes.
