The Oklahoma Sooners basketball program, which rose to national prominence in the early 1980s when coach Billy Tubbs and three-time All-American power forward Wayman Tisdale ruled the courts, has been consistently successful. Although they have yet to win the National Championship Title, The Sooners have registered themselves as the team with the second most amount of wins in tournament play without winning a title, just behind the University of Illinois. In 1988, they came close to absolving themselves of this stigma, but they fell short at the hands of the Kansas Jayhawks. After a 23-12, NCAA second-round run last season (07-08), the Sooners will be looking towards another year of rebuilding, but at the same time, a season with a very high potential. Third-year head coach Jeff Capel, who has two winning season records (the latter far better than the former), has built himself an impressive roster from meager resources. Now, with the help of returning veterans, including Blake Griffin (who by the way is projected to go number 1 in the 2009 NBA Draft), and new, incoming stars like Willie Warren, the Sooners depth will be more potent than ever. Players, coaches, and fans all feel a strange sense of excitement this year, as it could very well be the Year of the Sooners. The promise of the future, which seemed distant before, is now more attainable than ever.
