The Texas Tech Red Raiders compete in the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA (the National Collegiate Athletics Association) Division I A. Mens teams chose to be called the Red Riders, and women prefer the Lady Riders nickname. From 1932 the Texas Tech Red Raiders participated in the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association. From 1956 till 1995 they were the members of the Southwest Athletic Conference.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders womens basketball team is considered to be one of the most successful ones. In 1993 they reached the top of their dream and became the national champions. The star of the team became Sheryl Swoopes, who showed how the real champions game should be played. Marsha Sharp, the teams head coach, was the main component of their success. At the beginning of 2006 she resigned, and the new teams coach was elected, Kristy Curry.
