About Vanderbilt Commodores Basketball

The Vanderbilt Commodores is the men's basketball team that is often considered to be among the school's strongest teams. The team is nicknamed the Commodores in honor of the name belonging to Cornelius Vanderbilt, to a person who devoted his life to shipping. Commodore as a term that was often used by the Navy in the 19th century to denote the commanding officer of a task force of ships. This officer was lower in rank than an admiral but higher in rank than a captain The mascot of the Vanderbilt Commodores is usually portrayed as a naval officer, the one coming from the 1880s. He is depicted with cutlass, chops, and naval regalia. As for the teams colors, they are black and gold: where black means the magnate's control of coal and gold the money.
