Wake Forest Demon Deacons basketball team represents Wake Forest University, which is a private, coeducational university situated in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. At the beginning, the Wake Forest team was called the Deacons, as long as it was associated with the Baptist Convention. Nevertheless, in 1941, after a brilliant victory over the Duke Blue Devils team, one newspaper reporter suggested that the Deacons played just like Demons. This is how the present name of team originated.

Wake Forest University is known to have won 7 national competitions in 3 different types of sports. The Demon Deacons take part in the NCAA's Division I and in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The school is said to be a member of the Tobacco Road or the Big Four. These terms refers to the four North Carolina Universities which are vivid rivals within the ACC, which includes Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State, and Wake Forest.
