The West Virginia Mountaineers basketball team is one of the athletic teams of West Virginia University (WVU), which is an institution of higher education situated in Morgantown, West Virginia. Originally it was named the Agricultural College of West Virginia. The name of the school changed in 1868. The was also successful in raising 16 Truman Scholars, 29 Goldwater Scholars, five members of USA Today's All-USA College Academic First Team, and two Udall Scholarship winners. West Virginia University is a current member of National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I and the Big East Conference. The University's mascot is a Mountaineer. The other major kind of sports besides basketball at the university is football, although some other sports also enjoy great popularity.
