The GMAC Bowl, formerly known as the Mobile Alabama Bowl, is a post-season NCAA-sanctioned college football bowl game played for Division I –A. Since 1999, the game has been played at Ladd Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama – that is where its former name comes from. GMAC Bowl’s conference tie-ins include C-USA team (Conference USA), MAC (Mid-American Conference) or WAC (Western Athletic Conference). After 2000, the game received corporate sponsorship from GMAC Financial Services, and got the name of the GMAC Bowl.
The most notable season in the history of GMAC Bowl was season 2001 when the legendary game between the Marshall Thundering Herd and East Carolina Pirates took place. That game set the record as the highest scoring bowl game of all time. In this contest, the Marshall Thundering Herd scored the most points in Bowl history. The record set in that game broke the previous one set by Texas Tech when they defeated Air Force 55-41 in the 1995 Copper Bowl.
January 7, 2007 is the day of the latest edition of the game, or in other words, the next-to-last bowl game in the 2006-07 bowl season. In that contest, the Golden Eagles of Southern Mississippi won a victory over Ohio Bobcats with the score 28-7.
In season 2008, the 9th annual GMAC Bowl contest will take place the night before the BCS National Championship Game on Sunday, January 6. The game will be played at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, AL at 7:00 p.m. CST.
