The Rose Bowl is an American college football game, which is held every year on the first of January. The stadium used has got the same name as the Bowl, and is situated in Pasadena, California. When the first of January falls on the Sunday the game is postponed to the following day. Two years the Rose Bowl became the BCS (the Bowl Championship Series) National Championship game.
The Rose Bowl is one of the oldest bowls. It is also considered to be one of the most prestigious. The Rose Bowl is sometimes called the Granddaddy of Them All to underline its long history. The first game was played on the first of January, 1902. This game began the tradition of the New Years Day games.
The first participants were the University of Michigan and Stanford University. The former won with the score 49-0. That year for the Michigan University was one of the most successful ones, as they became the champions with a record score 11-0-0.
The Rose Bowl stadium was built only in 1923. Originally, the Bowl games were played in Pasadena s Tournament Park. The game was usually broadcast by NBC (the National Broadcasting Company), but beginning from 1988 it has been televised on ABC (the American Broadcasting Company). The usual participants were a team from the Pacific Coast Conference and a team from further east. Later, in 1947 it was decided that one of the teams should be the champion of the Big 10 and the other – the champion of the Pac-10 Conference.
For many years the Rose Bowl did not have any sponsors. Only in 1998 the AT&T agreed to sponsor the game. In 2002 a new contract was signed with the PlayStation2. In 2004 Citi (Citygroup Inc., a major American financial services NY company) became the new sponsor.
In 2003 the Oklahoma Sooners first appeared in the Rose Bowl. In 2004 the USC Trojans won over the Michigan Wolverines. In 2005 the Texas Longhorns (despite much controversy they were elected instead of the California Golden Bears) met with Michigan. It was the first appearance and the first victorious game of Texas. The following year Texas won again over the Southern California (41-38). Lately this Bowl game was named one of the most thrilling championship games in the long-time history of the Rose Bowl. The MVPs (the Most Valuable Players) of the last four Rose Bowl games became Nate Hybl, Matt Leinart, and Vince Young (twice, in 2005 and 2006).
On the first of January, 2007 the Big 10 Conference champion will meet the Pacific 10 Conference champion.
