The Cougars of Brigham Young University know what dedication to a sport means. Every year the basketball and football teams at BYU come out with the ferocity that would make a real cougar proud. The Cougars players are among some of the most talented, ambitious, and intelligent student athletes in the NCAA. BYU football and basketball pose a double threat to NCAA Championship every year. In 1984, BYU football reached its pinnacle (so far) when it thrashed all the competition and went undefeated throughout the entire season. To top that off, they also took home that year's National Championship. Cougars football has since then continued its tradition of excellence, especially when defending their home turf at LaVell Edwards Stadium. BYU has developed many college players into NFL talent (i.e. Superbowl winners Jim McMahon and Steve Young) and they are extremely consistent in their bowl game appearances, last playing UCLA in the 2007 Las Vegas Bowl. This year the Cougars have their eyes set on the National trophy. But the basketball program will not be outdone by the football team. It shows in their statistics. BYU Basketball is one of the top 25 most victorious teams in the NCAA, with 82 winning seasons, 2 NIT Championships and 26 Conference Titles. It was ranked 36th in the "100 Greatest College Basketball Programs of All Time" by Street and Smith in 2005. Since then, the quality has not diminished whatsoever. As of 2008, the Cougars hold the longest ongoing home-game winning streak, 47, and will search to extend that record.
