Founded in 1885, the University of Arizona is situated in Tucson, Arizona State. It was the first university in Arizona and currently has about 37.000 students. Like in many other large American universities, much attention is devoted to sports. The university sports teams are called the Arizona Wildcats. This name dates back to 1914, when a captivating football match took place. The team appeared to be very strong in comparison with the rivals, and according to the Los Angeles Times "the Arizona men showed the fight of wildcats." The Wildcats are the participants of the NCAA's (the National Collegiate Athletics Association) Division I-A in the Pacific Ten Conference. They are training in baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's & women's cross country, football, men's and women's golf, gymnastics, women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming/diving, men's & women's tennis, and other sports.
The mascot of the University is a wildcat whose name is Wilbur. It was originally created as a cartoon character in the University's humor magazine in 1959. In November 2009 Wilbur will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of its existence.
The Wildcats main rival is Arizona State University (the Arizona State Sun Devils). Their basketball games were considered the hottest events in the NCAA in 2006. Another famous rival of the University of Arizona is the University of California (the California Golden Bears). There have always been very strong competitors since the beginning of the 90s. The Wildcats are famous for their high professional achievements mainly in basketball, as well as in football and baseball. The basketball team is currently playing at the McKale Center, a large athletics arena named after one of the Arizona Wildcats former basketball head coach, McKale.
In 1983 Lute Olson was hired at the position of the Arizona Wildcats basketball team head coach. Since that year the basketball team has become of the most successful ones during the history of the University of Arizona. By the 200502006 season the Wildcats have accumulated nineteen consecutive wins. They also were the participants of the conference games twenty-two times consecutively (this is a new record in the NCAA history). Four times Lute Olson lead his basketball team to a four-time participation in the Final Four (in 1988, 1994, 1997, and 2001). In 1997 the Wildcats played a thrilling game in the Elite Eight, which led them to the Final Four competition. The 1997 NCAA National Championship was another easy task for the Arizona Wildcats. They beat the national champions of the previous year, the University of Kentucky.
