The Auburn Tigers are sports teams representing Auburn University, which is located in Auburn, Alabama State. They are members of the Division I A of the NCAA (the National Collegiate Athletics Association) and of the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (the SEC). The Auburn Tigers womens basketball team is one of the most competitive teams in the USA and in the Southeastern Conference. In spite of the fact that the team is playing with such fierce and eternal championships participants, like Tennessee, Georgia, Vanderbilt and LSU, the Tigers were lucky to win 4 SEC Tournament championships and 4 regular season SEC championships. In all, the Auburn Tigers womens basketball team appeared 16 times in the NCAA tournament, and only in their first game in the NCAA, in 1982, they were defeated in the first round. Beginning from 1988 the Tigers participated in 3 National championships consecutively, and in 2003 they won the Womens NIT (the National Invitation Tournament). Joe Ciampi coached the team for twenty-five years until he retired after the 2003-2004 season. The new coach is Nell Fortner, who is a highly experienced, former Purdue and US National and Olympic team coach. The most prominent Auburn University players of the past include: Vickie Orr, Ruthie Bolton, Monique Morehouse, Carolyn Jones and Chantel Tremitiere.

Auburn Universitys two major competitors are Alabama and Georgia. Alabama is the fiercest competitor, and the rivalry has been always really intensive. It is also referred to as the Iron Bowl.
