Baylor Bears Basketball Background

The Baylor Bears is the name of the basketball team of Baylor University. Men's basketball team members are usually called the Bears, while the women's team is occasionally referred to as the Lady Bears. The University athletes take part in the NCAA's Division I. Besides, Baylor is the only private institution in the Big 12 Conference competition. Before becoming a member of the Big 12 Conference, The Baylor Bears were members of the Southwest Conference until its breakup in 1996. Baylor has transferred its opponents from the non-existent Southwest Conference, the most vivid of which are the Texas A&M University team and the University of Texas at Austin team. The mascot of the Baylor Bears is a bear called Judge.

The Baylor Lady Bears got the victory in the NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Tournament in 2005. Under the direction of the coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson, the Lady Bears won against the Michigan State University team with the score 84-62. Mulkey-Robertson was the first women's coach and the 3rd coach in the history, who got a victory an NCAA basketball tournament both playing and coaching.

The men's basketball team was marked by a scandal in 2003. A player of the team, Patrick Dennehy, was killed by another former player. The coach of the team Dave Bliss was made to leave his post, having been accused of making improper financial payouts to players. The University put itself on trial period, limited itself to 7 scholarships for 2 years and had a post-season ban for 1 year. The NCAA authorities initiated a non-conference ban for the 2005-2006 seasons and prolonged the span, during which the University would have limited recruiting abilities. In 2003, Scott Drew was hired as the head coach of the men's team at Baylor University after the abandonment of Dave Bliss because of a scandal.

The 2005 Bears had only 7 scholarship players and received only one victory in conference competition. Despite all the hardships, the present head coach Scott Drew managed to put together the 2005 team, which was ranked No. 7 in the USA by HoopScoop. The 2006 Bears basketball team have had Aaron Bruce as a member, the highest scoring first year student in the NCAA in 2005, and Mamadou Diene, one of the top 10 centers for the 2007 NBA draft.
