Only after the Second World War there was a rising interest to sports in America, particularly, to basketball, and finally, beginning with the 1945-46 season the basketball team became a permanent one.
Before 1960s the team didnt win any national basketball title, but in 1963 a new coach was hired (the legendary Bob Cousy), who made the team achieve a lot professionally.
The late 70s are thought to be the darkest years in the team history. One of the basketball players, Rick Kuhn, was found guilty and sentenced for being involved with Mafia. In 1979-80 season the Eagles became the members of the Big East Conference, and from that time the new era of basketball playing started for them. They were competing at the highest level of the NCAA Division I basketball.
In 1982 the Eagles were in the Elite Eight of the NCAA competition, and in 1997 and 2001 they at last won the Big East Tournament.
Among the main Eagles rivals are the Holly Cross and the University of Massachusetts. With the former, they met 109 times. The fist game was held in 1906, and ended with the Eagles win. To the teams regret, the last 15 out of 16 games with the Crusaders the later became the winners. The first game with the University of Massachusetts was played in 1905, and has been held every year since then. Their rivalry is known as the Commonwealth Classic.
The athletes from the Boston College Eagles team, who made their career in the NBA, include Michael Adams, John Bagley, Dana Barros, Troy Bell, Bill Curley, Gerry Ward, Jay Murphy, and Howard Eisley.
