Hoyas Basketball Tradition

The Hoya is the most dangerous plant on the basketball court. But it wasn’t always that way. In 1907, when the Georgetown Hoyas first came into formation in the collegiate basketball world, they were far from a solid team. They may have won their first game against The University of Virginia 22-11, but they enjoyed very sporadic success afterwards. That was until the 1943 season, when they reached the NCAA Championship game, eventually losing to Wyoming 46-34. Unfortunately for the Hoya program, however, any momentum they built up to this point was instantly halted by the start of World War II, causing following seasons to be cancelled. Then the second resurgence of the Hoya came during the late 70s and early 80s, and this was permanent. Since the 1974-1975 season, Georgetown has made it to the NCAA Tournament 24 times, with varying success along the way, including a 1984 National Title Championship win. Their past four years, under the guidance of John Thompson III, The Hoyas have never looked better. They have consistently posted above .500% records and topped out with a 30-7 record in 2007. This year, Thompson III and his well-balanced, extremely patient basketball squad will look to bounce back after their second-round upset to Davidson in the NCAA tournament.
