Hoyas NCAA Basketball

The Georgetown University Men's Basketball team represents Georgetown University and is casually called the Georgetown Hoyas. It is one of the most notable basketball programs in the NCAA. They were winners of the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship in 1984 under coach John Thompson, Jr. The team also moved to and was defeated in the Championship game in 1943, 1982, and 1985. The Georgetown Hoyas achieved great success in the first years of appearance in the Big East. Namely the team used to win or simply compete for the regular-season titles in the years 1980, 1984, 1987, 1989, and 1992. The team showed even better results in the Big East Men's Basketball Championship. It was the winner in 1980, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1989.

The Hoyas have trained many players for the NBA. Two team members became the NBA first overall draft picks. They were Patrick Ewing in 1985 and Allen Iverson in 1996. Other Hoyas team members in the NBA are Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje, Sleepy Floyd, Alonzo Mourning, Jaren Jackson, Dikembe Mutombo, Othella Harrington, Don Reid, Charles Smith, Michael Sweetney, Jahidi White, Jerome Williams, Reggie Williams, and David Wingate.

The present coach of the team is Thompson's son, John Thompson III, who was preceded by Craig Esherick. John Thompson III's first important victory with the team happened on January 21, 2006, when unranked Hoyas defeated the team of Duke University. It was Hoyas first victory over a number one team in 21 years. In the victory over Duke University, John Thompson III was the head coach, while Patrick Ewing, Jr. was sitting on the bench.

The Georgetown Hoyas presently exercise their own variant of the so-called Princeton offense, which is a slow style of playing. The main feature of the offense is the backdoor pass. A player on the wing in such offense unexpectedly proceeds to the basket, takes a bounce pass from a guard, and finds himself with no defenders between him and the basket. Coach Thompson adopted the style when working under Pete Carril of the Princeton University Tigers.

In the 2006-2007 season the Georgetown Hoyas have one of the NCAA's best recruiting classes. The team will get DaJuan Summers from Owings Mills, Md. /McDonogh, Vernon Macklin from Hargrave Military Academy and Jeremiah Rivers from Winter Park, Fla. Forward Summers was awarded the Baltimore City Player of the Year. Rivers took part in USA Basketball's Youth Development Festival and the NBA Players' Association Top 100 camp. Vernon Macklin has been called a McDonald's All-American and Mr. Basketball in Virginia.
