Indiana Hoosiers basketball team represents one of the athletic teams of Indiana University (IU), located in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana. The school possesses one of the best college basketball programs, which can only be compared to a number of other high-class programs. Indiana University team has got devoted basketball fans, and the tickets to the matches are often completely sold out. The Indiana Hoosiers have risen to the top 10 nationally in attendance 30 seasons since 1972.
By the beginning of 2006, the University had won victories in five championships in men's basketball, namely in the years 1940, 1953, 1976, 1981 and 1987. The first two victories were received under coaching of Branch McCracken, while the other 3 under Bob Knights coaching. According to the number of wins in NCAA Championships, the Hoosiers team is the third in the history. Having been eight times in the Final Four, the team is the seventh in the all-time list. The basketball team has taken part in NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament 32 times. In those 32 times the Indiana Hoosiers have achieved 52 wins, which is the sixth-most in NCAA history. Until today, the Indiana University team is the last men's college basketball team, which has gone undefeated, putting a 32-0 record in 1976.
Under coach Knight, the men's basketball at Indiana University became unusually popular, especially in the 1975-1976 season. This season he headed the squad, which turned out to be the last men's Division I team to go undefeated for the whole basketball season and become the champion in the NCAA. However, Knight's inconstant character often raised much controversy to the school as success, and in the end he was dismissed in 2000 by President Myles Brand. Students and graduates began to protest against the dismissal. Some players were even ready to quit their team unless the coach was replaced by his assistant Mike Davis. Finally Mike Davis got the job and led the team to the NCAA Mens Division I Basketball Championship. The next several years were really hard for both the coach and the team, but despite the coachs announcement of his resignation, he remained with his team for the 2006 season. In March of the same year, a new coach was hired. His name is Kevin Sampson. On October 13, 2006, number 2 prep. Prospect Eric Gordon, who is ranked the #1 Shooting guard in the USA, officially announced about his decision to attend Indiana University.
