The Iowa Hawkeyes is the name which is used for all the teams which represent the University of Iowa. The athletes participate in 23 different sports, eleven of which are for men and twelve for women. The university is a member of the NCAA (the National Collegiate Athletics Association) Division 1A and the Big 10 Conference.

The Iowa Hawkeyes borrowed their name from their native state Iowa and from the name of the old chief who participated in the Black War in 1832. The nickname was chosen thanks to the judge David Rorer and James G. Edwards. The former worked in Burlington, the city, which was constructed after the Black Hawk war, and the later was the editor of the Fort Madison Patriot periodical, who later moved to the same city, and moreover, renamed his newspaper into the Burlington Hawkeye after the Chief Black Hawk, his friend.
The official universitys colors are old gold and black. The Iowa Hawkeyes teams mascot is the Herky Hawkeye. The current athletics director is Gary Barta.
The Iowa Hawkeyes basketball teams play at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It is also the home to the gymnastics, volleyball, and wrestling teams. The sports facility was opened in January 1983. Trade shows and various concerts are also held there due to the large seating capacity more than fifteen thousand people. The arena owes its name to Roy J. Carver, who was a well-known university booster. The Carver-Hawkeye facility became the arena for 1994 and 2001 NCAA wrestling tournaments, gymnastics championships, and the 1984 Olympic Wrestling trials.
The Iowa Hawkeyes basketball teams have won eight Big Ten titles (in 1923, 1926, 1945, 1955, 1956, 1968, 1970, and 1979), and two Bid Ten Tournament titles (in 2001 and 2006). In all, the team appeared in twenty-two NCAA tournaments and tree times participated in the Final Fours (in 1955, 1956, and 1980).
The Iowa Hawkeyes womens basketball team is the holder of eight Big Ten titles (won in 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1996, and 1998) and two Big Ten Tournament titles (won in 1997 and 2001). The womens team appeared in the NCAA Tournament sixteen times and once in the Final Four (in 1993).
